On this page you are able to view a number of photographs of the Sand House and its associated tunnels and carvings. We are very grateful to Doncaster Museum Service at Cusworth Hall for permission to publish the 13 images which are marked ‘Copyright Doncaster Museum Service’. These are copies from glass plate negatives originally captured by local photographer Mr Horace Franklin c.1936 and deposited with Cusworth Hall Museum in 1997. They were re-discovered in September 2013. Although the quality of some of these Franklin images is not great, the subject matter of several of them does not appear on any other known photographs. Therefore, this set of 13 images was the most significant find of Sand House photographs in decades.
The other images in this gallery all date from the early 20th century. They are just a small selection from the many images that appear in the book ‘The Sand House – A Victorian Marvel Revisited’, by Richard Bell and Peter Tuffrey. Please visit our Shop for information on how to obtain a copy of this book.
If you have any photographs taken in and around the Sand House, please contact us, as we would be delighted to see them.
